My Thoughts on “Risen”
As a fan of biblical films, I was eager to watch “Risen”, a 2016 movie directed by Kevin Reynolds and starring Joseph Fiennes as Clavius, a Roman tribune tasked with solving the mystery of Jesus’ disappearance from his tomb after his crucifixion. I have to say, the movie didn’t disappoint. Not only did it portray the story of Jesus in a unique and refreshing way, but it also showcased some stellar performances from its cast.
The Plot: A Fresh Take on an Old Story
The plot of “Risen” revolves around Clavius, who is tasked with investigating the disappearance of Jesus’ body from his tomb after reports suggest that he has risen from the dead. The story starts off like a detective mystery as Clavius interrogates witnesses and tries to piece together what happened, but it quickly turns into something more profound as Clavius begins to question everything he knows about life and death.
One of the things I loved about the movie is how it doesn’t shy away from showing the brutality of Roman rule in Judea at the time. The scenes depicting crucifixion are gut-wrenching and serve as a stark reminder of how cruel humans can be to one another.
The Characters: Strong Performances All Around
Joseph Fiennes is excellent as Clavius, portraying him as a tough and no-nonsense soldier who gradually softens as he begins to understand the power of Jesus’ teachings. Tom Felton also deserves praise for his portrayal of Lucius, Clavius’ loyal right-hand man who initially doubts Jesus’ divinity but eventually comes to believe.
The standout performance for me, though, was that of Cliff Curtis as Jesus. Instead of portraying him as a saintly figure, Curtis imbues Jesus with a sense of humanity and compassion that is both relatable and inspiring. His scenes with Clavius are some of the movie’s most touching moments.
The Score and Popularity: A Well-Deserved Success
The score for “Risen” is hauntingly beautiful and sets the mood perfectly for each scene. The movie was well-received by audiences, grossing over $46 million worldwide against its $20 million budget. It’s not hard to see why – the movie provides a fresh take on an old story that is both thought-provoking and emotionally resonant.
My Evaluation: A Must-See for Fans of Biblical Films
All in all, I highly recommend “Risen” to anyone who enjoys biblical films or is looking for something new and meaningful to watch. The movie’s unique take on the story of Jesus combined with its strong performances makes it a must-see in my book.
