The Wild West Never Looked So Steamy: Lust in the Dust

When I first heard about the movie “Lust in the Dust,” I have to admit, I was a bit skeptical. I mean, a movie with a title like that can’t be taken seriously, right? But after watching it, boy was I wrong. It’s not some over-the-top cheesy western romp. It’s actually quite an entertaining film with plenty of laughs and unexpected twists.

The Plot

The basic premise of “Lust in the Dust” is that Rosie Velez (Divine), a tough and sassy prostitute, teams up with mysterious gunslinger Abel Wood (Tab Hunter) to find buried treasure somewhere in the desert. Along the way, they meet various characters including saloon owner Marguerita Ventura (Lainie Kazan), bandit Hard Case Williams (Geoffrey Lewis), and preacher Father Garcia (Cesar Romero). But as they get closer to finding the treasure, alliances are tested and secrets are revealed.

The Cast

Let’s talk about the cast for a moment. This movie has some interesting choices for lead roles. Divine, who had a cult following for her performances in John Waters’ films, brings her signature campy style to her role as Rosie Velez. Tab Hunter, who was once considered a teen heartthrob in the 1950s, plays against type as stone-faced Abel Wood. The supporting cast is also noteworthy with veteran actors like Geoffrey Lewis and Cesar Romero adding their own flair to their roles. And of course, Lainie Kazan as the feisty Marguerita Ventura steals every scene she’s in with her larger-than-life personality.

The Humor

One of the things that sets “Lust in the Dust” apart from other westerns is its humor. From the quirky characters to the witty one-liners, there’s no shortage of laughs. But it’s not just slapstick comedy and fart jokes (although there are some of those too). The humor is clever, often poking fun at western tropes and gender roles. For example, Rosie Velez is not your typical damsel in distress. She can hold her own against any man and even saves Abel Wood from danger multiple times.

The Music

Speaking of gender roles, let’s talk about the music. The score was composed by Dean Pitchford, who also wrote the screenplay. The music has a distinct 80s pop feel to it with synthesizers and electric guitars, but it somehow works within the context of a western. One standout song is “Deep in Your Heart” performed by Emmylou Harris which plays during a romantic scene between Rosie Velez and Abel Wood.

The Reception

“Lust in the Dust” was not a commercial success when it was first released in 1985. Critics were mixed on the film, with some praising its humor and performances while others found it to be too silly. However, over the years it has gained a cult following and is now regarded as a cult classic.

My Thoughts

So, what did I think of “Lust in the Dust”? I have to say, I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. It’s not a masterpiece by any means, but it’s an entertaining romp with memorable characters and a fun storyline. The humor can be hit-or-miss at times, but when it hits, it really hits. And the performances are all top-notch with everyone fully committed to their roles.

The Bottom Line

If you’re in the mood for something different from your typical western fare, give “Lust in the Dust” a chance. It’s not for everyone, but if you’re looking for a good laugh and an enjoyable ride, then saddle up and join Rosie Velez and Abel Wood on their treasure-hunting adventure.
