The Storyline of “Good”

Starring Viggo Mortensen and Jason Isaacs, “Good” is a historical drama film set in Germany during the rise of Nazi power. The film tells the story of John Halder, a literary professor who gets caught up in the Nazi movement despite his liberal and humane beliefs.

The movie unfolds as Halder falls prey to the seductive rhetoric of the Nazis and becomes one of their most trusted members. However, as he gets deeper into the movement, he finds himself questioning his own morality and struggling with his ideals versus his actions in support of an increasingly violent regime.

The Score and Popularity

“Good” has a haunting score composed by James Horner that adds to the film’s eerie atmosphere. However, despite its powerful themes and excellent cast, the movie did not receive much attention when it was released in 2008.

Perhaps the subject matter was too difficult for mainstream audiences, or maybe there simply wasn’t enough buzz around the film at the time. Regardless, “Good” deserves to be seen by a wider audience as it remains just as relevant today as it was when it was made.

The Cinematography and Special Effects

The cinematography in this film is stunningly beautiful, capturing both the elegance of pre-war Germany as well as its descent into darkness under Nazi rule. The sets are meticulously crafted to evoke an accurate portrayal of 1930s Berlin.

There aren’t any special effects per se in this film, but that doesn’t detract from its impact. Instead, director Vicente Amorim wisely chose to focus on the performances and the power of the story itself, allowing us to see how far Halder has fallen without any flashy distractions.

The dialogue in this film is sharp, nuanced, and thought-provoking. The script by John Wrathall manages to convey complex ideas without ever feeling pedantic or preachy.

My Evaluation of “Good”

“Good” left me feeling haunted and disturbed long after I finished watching it. The performances by Mortensen and Isaacs are outstanding, drawing me into their characters’ struggles with morality and conscience.

The film’s exploration of Nazi propaganda and how it was able to turn otherwise decent people into collaborators in unspeakable crimes against humanity is a sobering reminder of the dangers that come with conformity, intolerance, and moral relativism.

“Good” is not an easy movie to watch, but it’s an important one that will stay with you long after you leave the cinema.
