Introduction
There are some movies that you watch and you’re like “meh” and then there are some movies that just make you feel something. Elysium is definitely a movie in the latter category. It’s an action-packed, sci-fi thriller with a big heart, but it also tackles some heavy themes about society, class, and healthcare. Plus, there are some seriously badass fight scenes.
The Storyline
The plot of Elysium is set in the year 2154 when Earth has become overpopulated and diseased. The wealthy live on a space station called Elysium, while the rest of humanity lives on the ruined planet below. The story follows Max (played by Matt Damon), a former criminal who works in a factory building robots for the rich people on Elysium. When Max gets exposed to lethal radiation at work, he has five days to get to Elysium where they have machines that can cure any disease.
The Casts
Elysium has an all-star cast with Matt Damon in the lead role. Jodie Foster plays Delacourt, the Secretary of Defense on Elysium who will stop at nothing to keep the poor people of Earth out. Sharlto Copley plays Kruger, an insane mercenary sent to take down Max. Alice Braga plays Frey, Max’s childhood friend who is now a nurse on Earth. And Diego Luna plays Julio, Max’s best friend and partner in crime. All of the actors give great performances, but Sharlto Copley steals the show as Kruger. He’s absolutely terrifying.
The Plot
The plot of Elysium is definitely action-packed, but it also has a lot of heart. There are some really emotional moments between Max and Frey as they try to save her daughter’s life. And there are also some really powerful scenes that highlight the class divide between the rich on Elysium and the poor on Earth. The villains in the movie are pretty one-dimensional, but that doesn’t take away from the overall experience.
The Score and Popularity
The score for Elysium was composed by Ryan Amon and it’s absolutely fantastic. It’s epic and emotional and really adds to the overall experience of watching the movie. As far as popularity goes, Elysium didn’t quite make a huge splash at the box office, but it definitely has a dedicated fan base.
The Evaluation
I would definitely give Elysium a solid 8 out of 10. It’s not a perfect movie by any means, but it’s definitely a thrilling and emotional ride. The action scenes are top-notch and the themes of class and healthcare are especially relevant in today’s society.
The Cinematography
The cinematography in Elysium is stunning. The contrast between the ruined Earth and the luxurious Elysium station is really striking. And the action scenes are shot in a way that really makes you feel like you’re right there in the middle of it all.
The Opinion
Personally, I loved Elysium. It definitely has its flaws, but I think it’s an important movie that tackles some really relevant social issues. Plus, I’m always down for a good sci-fi action movie.
The Special Effects
The special effects in Elysium are top-notch. The robot designs are really cool and the explosions and gunfights look amazing. But what’s even more impressive is how seamlessly they integrated these special effects with real actors and physical sets.
The Dialogue
The dialogue in Elysium is pretty good. There are some really memorable moments, like when Max tells Frey that he’s not going to let anything happen to her daughter. But there are also some clunky lines and cheesy moments.
The Crews
Elysium was directed by Neill Blomkamp, who also directed the critically acclaimed sci-fi movie District 9. The movie was produced by Bill Block, Simon Kinberg, and Neill Blomkamp himself. The screenplay was also written by Neill Blomkamp.
The Production
Elysium was filmed in Vancouver, Canada with a budget of $115 million. The movie had some production issues, including Matt Damon getting injured during filming and the studio insisting on Jodie Foster having a terrible French accent. But overall, the production went pretty smoothly.
The Editing
The editing in Elysium is really well done. The action scenes are cut together with precision and there are some really cool transitions between scenes. The pacing of the movie is also good, with just the right amount of action and character development.
The Characters
The characters in Elysium are all pretty well developed. Max is a flawed but likable protagonist who just wants to do the right thing. Frey is a strong-willed woman who will do anything to protect her daughter. And Kruger is an insane villain who’s just fun to watch on screen.
The Analysis
Elysium definitely has some deeper themes that are worth analyzing. The movie tackles issues like class divide, healthcare, and immigration. It’s a commentary on the current state of society and what could happen if we continue down our current path.
The Soundtracks
As mentioned earlier, the score for Elysium was composed by Ryan Amon and it’s really great. There are some really epic tracks that go perfectly with the action scenes. The soundtrack also includes some licensed songs, including “I Will Return” by Skylar Grey.
The History
Elysium was released in 2013 and was directed by Neill Blomkamp. It received mixed reviews from critics, but has since gained a bit of a cult following. The movie was inspired by the director’s own experiences growing up in apartheid South Africa.
The Criticism
One of the main criticisms of Elysium is that it’s too heavy-handed with its social commentary. Some people also didn’t like how one-dimensional the villains were. And there were some complaints about Jodie Foster’s terrible French accent.
The Gossip
There isn’t really any juicy gossip surrounding Elysium. Matt Damon did get injured during filming, but other than that, it seems like the production went pretty smoothly.
Conclusion
In conclusion, Elysium is definitely a movie that’s worth watching if you’re into sci-fi action movies with heart. It has some really great performances, top-notch special effects, and an important message about society. It’s not perfect, but it’s definitely a thrilling ride.
