Introduction
It’s not often I write about movies, but after watching “The Snowman” I felt compelled to express my thoughts on it. The movie, based on Jo Nesbo’s bestselling novel, was released in 2017 and starred Michael Fassbender and Rebecca Ferguson in leading roles.
Storyline
“The Snowman” is a crime thriller movie that follows detective Harry Hole (Michael Fassbender) as he investigates the disappearance of a woman who appears to have been murdered by a serial killer known as the “Snowman.” As the investigation unfolds, Harry discovers that the killer has been active for decades and may be linked to his own past.
Cast
The movie boasts an impressive cast with Michael Fassbender, Rebecca Ferguson, Charlotte Gainsbourg, J.K. Simmons, Val Kilmer and Toby Jones in prominent roles. Fassbender is known for his intense acting skills while Ferguson is quickly becoming an action star thanks to her roles in “Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation” and “Doctor Sleep.”
Plot
The plot of the movie is intriguing, but unfortunately, it falls short of expectations. The pace of the movie is slow, and there are several subplots that are not given enough time to develop. This makes the movie feel disjointed and confusing at times.
History
The novel “The Snowman” was published in 2007 and became a bestseller in Norway. It was later translated into English and became popular worldwide. The movie adaptation was announced in 2011, but it took six years for the movie to actually be released.
Opinion
I have mixed feelings about “The Snowman.” On one hand, the acting is superb, and the cinematography is stunning. The Norwegian landscape adds an eerie atmosphere to the movie that perfectly fits the genre. On the other hand, the plot is convoluted, the pacing is slow, and some scenes feel unnecessary.
Scenes
Despite its flaws, there are several scenes in “The Snowman” that are worth mentioning. One of my favorites is when Harry visits his ex-girlfriend Rakel (Charlotte Gainsbourg) and her son Oleg (Michael Yates). The scene is tense and emotional, and highlights Fassbender’s acting skills.
Soundtrack
The movie’s soundtrack is composed by Marco Beltrami, who is known for his work on “Logan” and “Scream.” The soundtrack adds to the atmosphere of the movie, but it’s not particularly memorable.
Cinematography
The cinematography in “The Snowman” is stunning. The Norwegian landscape is breathtaking, and the camera work captures it beautifully. The snow-covered scenery adds to the eerie atmosphere of the movie.
Analysis
“The Snowman” could have been a great movie, but unfortunately, it falls short. The plot is convoluted and confusing, and some scenes feel unnecessary. However, there are several redeeming qualities such as the acting and cinematography that make the movie worth watching.
Special Effects
The special effects in “The Snowman” are minimal, but the scenes where the Snowman appears are well done. The creepy snowman with a human face is sure to send shivers down your spine.
Dialogue
The dialogue in “The Snowman” is sparse, with many scenes relying on the eerie atmosphere created by the Norwegian landscape and the music. However, when there is dialogue, it’s well-written and adds to the tension of the scene.
Evaluation
In my opinion, “The Snowman” is a movie that could have been much better. The plot is confusing and disjointed, but the acting and cinematography make it worth watching. It’s an average movie that could have been great if more time was spent on developing the plot.
Gossip
There was some controversy surrounding “The Snowman” during its production. Val Kilmer had to drop out of filming due to health issues, which resulted in his scenes being reshot with a different actor. Additionally, reports surfaced that director Tomas Alfredson wasn’t happy with how much of Nesbo’s novel made it into the final cut.
Criticism
“The Snowman” was widely criticized for its confusing plot and slow pace. Many reviewers felt that the movie didn’t live up to its potential and could have been much better. The movie currently holds a 7% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Production
The production of “The Snowman” took six years, and there were several setbacks along the way. Kilmer’s health issues, as well as Alfredson’s unhappiness with the final cut, resulted in the movie being delayed multiple times. Additionally, there were reports of on-set tension between Alfredson and Fassbender.
Fact
The title of the movie comes from the snowmen left by the killer at each of his crime scenes. The snowmen are creepy and add to the overall eerie atmosphere of the movie.
Characters
The characters in “The Snowman” are well-acted, but unfortunately, some are not given enough time to develop. Fassbender’s character Harry is interesting, but his backstory is not explored enough. Ferguson’s character Katrine Bratt has potential, but her storyline is not fully fleshed out.
Quote
“Winter sports are just indoor sports with a different uniform,” quips Harry at one point during the movie. The quote is humorous and adds a bit of levity to an otherwise serious movie.
Conclusion
In conclusion, “The Snowman” is not a great movie, but it’s not terrible either. It has its flaws, but it also has some redeeming qualities such as the acting and cinematography. If you’re a fan of crime thrillers or enjoy watching Fassbender on screen, it’s worth giving “The Snowman” a chance.
