Horrid Henry: The Movie – A Casual Review
If you are a fan of the Horrid Henry books series written by Francesca Simon, then you might be intrigued by the idea of turning this beloved character into a movie. The film adaptation, titled “Horrid Henry: The Movie,” was directed by Nick Moore and released in 2011. As someone who grew up reading the books, I was curious about how this movie would capture the essence of the characters and storylines.
The Storyline
The plot follows Horrid Henry (Theo Stevenson), a mischievous boy who would rather watch TV than do his homework. He constantly gets into trouble with his parents (Richard E. Grant and Siobhan Hayes) and his little brother Perfect Peter (Ross Marron). However, when he discovers that an evil headmaster (Anjelica Huston) is planning to shut down their school, Horrid Henry takes it upon himself to save the day.
While the storyline is similar to some of the book’s plots, it feels like a rehashing of old themes with some additional elements thrown in to stretch out for a full-length feature film.
The Casts
The cast of the movie does a decent job of portraying the beloved characters. Theo Stevenson’s portrayal of Horrid Henry is convincing and he captures the mischievous personality that fans know and love. On the other hand, Anjelica Huston’s portrayal of Miss Battle-Axe is over-the-top and feels like a caricature, which is disappointing since she is one of the book series’ most notable villains.
The Soundtrack
The soundtrack for “Horrid Henry: The Movie” features various pop songs that are catchy and enjoyable. The inclusion of some original songs directly related to the movie’s storyline works well too.
Evaluation
As a longtime fan of the Horrid Henry books series, I wanted to like this movie more than I actually did. While it was entertaining to see some of my favorite characters come to life on screen, the film felt like it lacked depth and originality. Some scenes felt contrived, and some jokes missed the mark.
Furthermore, one cannot ignore how poorly received this movie was by critics and audiences alike. It currently holds a 3.6/10 rating on IMDb, which is lower than most family movies in its genre. The movie was seen as a box office flop and did little to impress fans of the books series with its adaptation.
Conclusion
All in all, “Horrid Henry: The Movie” is a decent watch if you have nothing else to do or are just curious about how one of your favorite book series translates into film. However, if you are looking for something with greater depth or true to the heart of the book series, you might want to skip this movie and revisit the books instead.
