A Lot of Nothing: A Story About Escaping Reality
Have you ever felt like your life is a routine? Like everything is the same day after day, and you’re just going through the motions? The movie “A Lot of Nothing” tells a story about three friends who want to escape their mundane lives in a small town in Florida. Directed by Mo McRae, it premiered at the South by Southwest Film Festival in 2021.
The Plot
The movie starts with the trio smoking weed in their backyard, discussing how they wish they could leave and start over. After a tragic incident, they decide to rob a local drug dealer to make some quick cash and leave town. As they attempt to execute the plan, unexpected twists and turns ensue that challenge their friendship and morality.
The Casts
The film features an ensemble cast starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as the main character named John, who is struggling with his marriage. He’s joined by Director Mo McRae himself as a friend named Mouse, who’s living off his girlfriend’s inheritance money, and Cleopatra Coleman as John’s wife named Penny.
The Soundtrack
The movie’s soundtrack includes a mix of classic and contemporary songs, including tracks from Billie Holiday, Esperanza Spalding, and Kendrick Lamar. It blends perfectly with the storyline, creating a melancholic yet dreamy atmosphere that takes you on a journey with the characters.
The Cinematography
The film’s visuals are stunning, with captivating shots of Florida’s palm trees and beaches contrasted with dark alleyways and dimly lit rooms. The cinematographer, John Tipton, does an excellent job of capturing the characters’ emotions through their facial expressions and body language.
The Themes
One of the movie’s main themes is escapism. Each character is trying to escape from their reality, but in different ways. John wants to escape from his failing marriage while Mouse wants to escape from their small-town life. Yet, as they attempt to do so through illegal means, they only add more problems to their lives.
My Thoughts
Overall, “A Lot of Nothing” is a beautiful and thought-provoking film that resonated with me. I could relate to the characters’ desires to escape from their lives but understood that sometimes, taking the easy way out is not the answer. The movie’s ending is ambiguous and open to interpretation, which leaves room for reflection and discussion.
Final Verdict
If you’re a fan of indie dramas with great storytelling, cinematography, and soundtracks, then you should definitely check out “A Lot of Nothing.” It’s not an action-packed thriller but rather a slow-burning character study that will make you think about your own life choices.
