My Thoughts on “Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk”
When I first heard about “Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk,” I was excited. The trailers looked intense and the storyline seemed like something I could really get behind. But after watching the movie, I have to say that my feelings are mixed.
The Storyline
The movie follows Billy Lynn, a young soldier who has recently returned from Iraq. He and his comrades are being honored at a football game halftime show, but throughout the day, Billy reflects on his time in the war and struggles with his newfound fame.
In theory, this is a great storyline. It has all of the elements of a powerful drama: war, PTSD, celebrity culture, etc. But in execution, something just didn’t click for me.
The Cast
The cast of “Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk” is impressive. Kristen Stewart, Vin Diesel, Steve Martin…there are some heavy hitters here. And yet, something still felt off about their performances.
It’s hard to put my finger on exactly what wasn’t working for me. Maybe it was the fact that they were trying too hard to be serious and dramatic. Maybe it was just a case of bad chemistry. Whatever it was, I found myself feeling disconnected from the characters.
The Cinematography
If there’s one thing that “Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk” does well, it’s the cinematography. Director Ang Lee experimented with a new high frame rate technology that makes everything look incredibly crisp and realistic.
In some ways, this added to the immersion of the movie. When we see flashbacks of Billy’s time in Iraq, it feels like we’re right there with him. But at the same time, it can be a bit distracting. There were moments where I found myself more focused on the visuals than on what was actually happening in the plot.
The Soundtrack
The soundtrack for “Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk” is nothing to write home about. There are some decent songs here and there, but for the most part, it doesn’t add much to the movie.
That being said, I did appreciate the use of silence in certain scenes. It made certain moments feel more impactful and intense.
My Overall Opinion
Overall, I have to say that “Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk” didn’t quite live up to my expectations. There were moments of brilliance, but they were few and far between.
That being said, I can see how this movie might resonate with some people. If you’re a fan of war movies or dramas, it’s worth giving this one a shot. Just don’t expect it to blow you away.
