The Nightmare Before Christmas: A Spooky Tale of Two Holidays
You know what’s great? Halloween. You know what’s also great? Christmas. Now imagine if you combined the two into one super cool holiday extravaganza. That’s exactly what Tim Burton did in his 1993 film, The Nightmare Before Christmas.
Set in the twisted world of Halloween Town, the movie follows Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King, as he discovers and becomes obsessed with Christmas Town. Jack decides to take over the holiday and make it his own, but realizes it’s not as easy as he thought when things start going terribly wrong.
Behind the Scenes of The Nightmare Before Christmas
The movie was directed by Henry Selick and produced by Tim Burton. It was also composed by Danny Elfman, who also provided the singing voice for Jack Skellington. Fun fact: Elfman was originally hired just to write the score for the film, but ended up taking on a much larger role because Tim Burton loved his demo recordings so much!
The movie took about three years to make and used stop-motion animation techniques to create its unique look. Each character had to be carefully crafted out of clay and other materials before being captured on camera one frame at a time. As a result, the movie has an incredibly detailed and textured appearance that still holds up today.
The Characters of The Nightmare Before Christmas
Of course, the real stars of The Nightmare Before Christmas are its characters. There’s Jack Skellington, the charismatic and curious leader who just wants to experience something new. Then there’s Sally, the ragdoll who secretly loves Jack and tries to warn him about the dangers of messing with Christmas. There’s also Oogie Boogie, the creepy boogeyman who tries to thwart Jack’s plans.
But perhaps my favorite character is Zero, Jack’s loyal ghost dog who helps him fly through the sky on his sleigh. Zero is adorable and a little bit sad, and he serves as a wonderful counterpoint to all of the dark and spooky imagery in the movie.
The Music of The Nightmare Before Christmas
One of the most memorable aspects of The Nightmare Before Christmas is its music. Danny Elfman wrote several catchy songs for the film that have become classics in their own right. There’s “This is Halloween”, sung by all of Halloween Town as they prepare for their favorite holiday. There’s “What’s This?”, in which Jack discovers Christmas Town for the first time and marvels at all of its wonders.
The songs are all incredibly fun and catchy, but they also help move the plot forward and reveal more about the characters’ motivations and feelings. They’re an essential part of what makes The Nightmare Before Christmas so special.
